Mississippi People's Movement began as MS for a Green New Deal, a state hub of the Gulf South for a Green New Deal (GS4GND) formation. Seeded in 2019 and existing through 2023, GS4GND was a regional formation of more than 300 organizations advancing long-existing work towards climate, racial, and economic justice in five states across the Gulf South (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida) and Puerto Rico. In 2024, each state hub of GS4GND became and independent formation, and MS for a Green New Deal transitioned into MS People's Movement.

Rooted in bottom-up organizing and driven by frontline leadership, MS People's Movement moves together on policy, direct action campaigns, and strategic communications to advance climate, racial and economic justice in Mississippi. Mississippi People's Movement currently has over 30 organizations and community groups from across the state who commit to moving around shared priorities. Our shared priorities for 2023 were: advancing access to clean water; advancing food sovereignty and local food systems; advancing equitable disaster recovery; advancing green, affordable and healthy housing; and stopping petrochemical expansion and protecting Mississippi from false climate solutions.
